The electronic marketing system introduced at tobacco auctions this season continues to malfunction, and when it does work, many farmers don’t understand how it functions, The Standard reported.
“All we are seeing are big screens flashing numbers but to really understand what’s going on, we have no idea,” one grower told the Sunday newspaper. Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board spokesperson Isheanesu Moyo confirmed the breakdowns and said there have been complaints that the system is slow. Auction floors will continue to switch to manual when the new system isn’t working Moyo said. Consultants have been summoned to tackle the problems, he said in remarks reported by The Standard.
