The Federation of All India Farmer Associations (FAIFA) asked the government to include growers in the Indian delegation to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) plenary session in November, the Deccan Chronicle said.
“Indian farmers must be part of the official delegation of COP7, (or) else it would put livelihoods of millions at risk without any public health benefit," FAIFA reportedly told Parliament. COP7, the seventh meeting of the FCTC’s Conference of the Parties, is scheduled for 7-12 November in Noida, India.
Representatives of tobacco producers have been excluded from previous meetings of the COP. FAIFA and the Associated Chambers of Commerce (ASSOCHAM) asked Parliament to ensure tobacco growers would not be left out of government plans to double the income of farmers by 2022, the Chronicle said on its website.
