Filtrona Richmond Inc. announced on 30 March that it stopped operating the plant in Chesterfield County, Virginia, which makes cigarette filter components.
The local Filtrona operations are a subsidiary of UK-based Filtrona, a speciality plastic and fibre products supplier with 37 manufacturing plants in 23 countries. Glenn Pennycook, the company's regional director, said Filtrona will continue to supply to their existing costumers, including Philip Morris USA and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco, but the company is expecting demand to drop by about 60 per cent as exports decline. The filter parts they make company makes are typically used in exported cigarettes.
The company is consolidating its production with plants in Greensboro, N.C., and Monterrey, Mexico. The closing affects about 128 production workers.
