New Jersey would require cigarettes sold in-state have extra fire protections under a measure advanced 12 June 2006 in the assembly.
The proposal is modelled after similar laws in New York, Vermont, California, Illinois and New Hampshire. It would require cigarettes be made with paper that slows tobacco burning and extinguishes it if the cigarette is left unattended. In New Jersey, the Division of Fire Safety attributed 881 residential fires and five fatalities to blazes started by cigarettes in 2005. (pi)
