A draft law to legalise the medical use of cannabis has been ratified by the government with parliament still needing to give its final approval, reports France 24.

Morocco is the world’s largest producer of hashish with an estimated 700 tonnes produced in 2020, according to a study by the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime.
The draft of the potential new law calls for a national agency to regulate the industry and an establishment of cooperatives who would be allowed to grow “certified” cannabis plants, reports France 24. The ban on the recreational use of cannabis is to be upheld.
Making cannabis legal for medical use would turn illicit cannabis plantations into “legal and durable activities that generate jobs”, the text of the draft legislation reads. It would also position Morocco in a global market that is growing by 30 per cent each year, according to Morocco’s interior ministry.
