Graphic images must be displayed on cigarette packets sold in New Zealand starting on 28 February.
The images will include photos of gangrenous toes, smoking-damaged hearts, diseased lungs and rotting teeth and gums.
The move follows the five-year plan for tobacco control introduced by the country's ministry of health in 2004. Smoking has already been banned in pubs, restaurants, clubs and workplaces. However, figures from the ministry of health show the number of people smoking is higher than three years ago – 23.5 per cent of the population compared with 23 per cent – despite the ban. (pi)
