The International Tobacco Growers’ Association (ITGA) has chosen Latin America for its 1997 annual meeting

Delegates from 17 member countries will be in Argentina in November for a week of conferences and visits to farms. The ITGA chief executive, Mr David Walder, welcomed the choice of Argentina for the conference. “Argentina was a founder member of the ITGA and has always been a very active contributor to the organisation’s activities,” he commented. The country is a major producer of flue-cured and burley tobacco for the world market.
“This is the third time that our annual meeting has been held in Latin America and demonstrates the importance of the continent’s tobacco growers in the world markets,“ declared Mr Walder.
Leaf tobacco is grown in seven provinces of Argentina. The three main producing and exporting provinces are Jujuy and Salta (flue-cured) and Misiones (Burley). The country’s 1996 total leaf tobacco output amounted to 79 million kilos.
