A new regulation on air pollution control has been implemented in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, since 4 February 2006.
The first phase of the regulation is to restrict people from smoking in public spaces and to conduct gas emission tests on vehicles. For those who support the anti-tobacco movement, the measure is being praised as a significant move towards reducing air pollution. However, the lack of smoking rooms in office buildings, both in government and private offices, is causing difficulties for smokers. The Indonesian Parliament is one that has not provided a smoking room. In addition, the government of Jakarta City has only dispatched a limited task force and signs in order to provide information to the public. Although the regulation has been in place for two weeks, in most areas, people have tended to ignore the restrictions.
