A Florida jury awarded USD 37.5 million (EUR 28.3 million) to the family of a deceased woman smoker and held RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co partially responsible for her death, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
Jury members were told Laura Grossman was too young to understand the dangers of smoking when she began smoking at age 15, the newspaper reported. Grossman died of lung cancer in 1995. The Broward County court's award is comprised of USD 15 million in compensatory damage and USD 22.5 million in punitive damages against the US cigarette maker. The Sentinal said the verdict likely will be appealed.
