Juul hit with first wrongful death lawsuit

Juul Labs, the maker of the popular Juul e-cigarette brand, has been hit with a wrongful death lawsuit by a mother claiming that the product played a significant part in her 18-year-old son’s death more than a year ago, Bloomberg Law reported.

Daniel David Wakefield, a resident of Florida, “became intensely addicted” to the Juul’s nicotine products after being exposed to its advertising in 2015, the mother alleges.
Wakefield’s, whose behaviour changed radically after vaping, was hospitalised for three days within a year of picking of the habit, according to the plaintiff. In August 2018, after a day that included moving boxes, Wakefield’s father found him unresponsive, the report said. His death was attributed to “breathing complications,” the complaint says.
Juul’s allegedly improper marketing to minors is currently being investigated. Wakefield’s mother, Lisa Marie Vail, filed the suit 15 October in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, where San Francisco e-cigarette manufacturer is based. This comes after the recent reports of more than 1,000 cases of lung illness and 26 deaths as of 8 October linked to vaping.
According to the report, Juul didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
