Only 110,772 tobacco growers have registered for the 2021/22 farming season – a decrease of 2 per cent compared to the previous year, reports the Chronicle.
The deadline for signing up for the 2021/22 tobacco farming season has come and gone with the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) reporting that 110,772 tobacco farmers have registered. The previous year that number had stood at 112,472.
On the other hand, the area under irrigated tobacco has increased by 50 per cent to 15,000 hectares due to the good amounts of rain during the last season, according to the Chronicle. Golden leaf is an important export product for Zimbabwe and has been pivotal in providing liquidity support in the country. Zimbabwe exports to over 60 countries globally making over USD 1 billion every year.
