During its fall session, the Navajo Nation Council will consider legislation to ban the use of tobacco products in public and at workplaces, reports Farmington Daily Times.
The "Nilch' éí Bee Ííná – Air is Life Act 2021" is seeking to prohibit smoking in public and at the workplace as well as at the tribe's casinos, but does not restrict using tobacco products at home or the use of ceremonial tobacco.
It is not the first time a ban has been considered. As far back as 2008, similar proposals went to tribal lawmakers but failed to go through. In 2011, President Ben Shelly vetoed a measure that would have seen smoking and the use of chewing tobacco banned in all public spaces except casinos, reports Farmington Daily Times. In 2014, Shelly signed an executive order that banned the use of tobacco inside of buildings under the control of the executive branch.
