The New Jersey state legislature voted to raise the minimum age to 21 for the purchase of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, the Bergen Dispatch reported.
The bill that would make New Jersey the second state after Hawaii to hike the smoking age to 21 awaits the signature of Governor Chris Christie. “With this legislation, we would offer time and the opportunity to grow up a little first before making a decision that could change the course of someone’s life forever,” said Patrick Diegnan, who the Dispatch cited as one of the bill sponsors.
New Jersey is one of four US states where the minimum smoking age is 19 instead of 18.
