North Carolina claims Juul targets youth in lawsuit

North Carolina has sued e-cigarette manufacturer Juul, alleging that it has marketed its products to children and has misled the public about the risks associated with using its products, CNN reported.

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein said that the lawsuit is based on an investigation his office began in October which involved requesting information from the company on its sales and marketing practices.
“My investigation showed two things: One, it targeted young people. And two, it misleads the public about the potency of nicotine in its products. You only have to walk through any high school parking lot in North Carolina to see how pervasive Juul is among young people in our state,” Stein was quoted as saying about the company’s marketing tactics.
“Juul claims its products are for adults, but its business strategy clearly targeted young people and minors.”
Also, the lawsuit alleges that Juul regularly downplays the strength of nicotine in its products, the CNN report stated.
Juul has adamantly insisted that its products are not for children and are intended for adult smokers who want to quit or switch. In response to the lawsuit, Juul said in a statement, “While we have not yet reviewed the complaint, we share the Attorney General's concerns about youth vaping, which is why we have been cooperating with his office and why we have taken the most aggressive actions of anyone in the industry to combat youth usage.”
North Carolina is the first state to file a lawsuit against the company for its alleged marketing toward minors, according to the report.
