Lawmakers in the nation's largest tobacco-producing state cracked down today on lighting up.
The legislature approved a bill to ban smoking in all general assembly buildings.
The House voted 95-to-14 to give the bill final approval and send it to governor Easley, who must sign it.
Lawmakers said they were taking action to cut the risk of second-hand smoke inside the public buildings where they work.
Earlier this week, the surgeon general released a report citing "overwhelming scientific evidence" that involuntary smoking causes heart disease, lung cancer and a list of other illnesses. North Carolina produces about 70 per cent of the Unites States' flue-cured tobacco. Tobacco companies Reynolds American, Lorillard and Phillip Morris are either based in the state or have big plants there. (pi)
