A poll released by the tobacco education foundation Legacy shows 34 per cent of surveyed adult smokers resolved to quit smoking in 2013.
Eighteen per cent of respondents said they had made the same New Year’s resolution for 2012, according to the foundation created in 1999 out of the Master Settlement Agreement between the tobacco industry, most US states and territories.
Two thirds of respondents said increasing cost of cigarettes played a role in their decisions and 58 per cent cited health risks. The poll was conducted online between 26 Nov and 5 Dec with 1,552 respondents who said they have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime and smoke at least occasionally, Legacy said. Partial funding came from the Pfizer pharmaceutical company. (ci)
