After much debate in Kenya’s parliament, the tobacco control bill, which provides for the control of the production and advertising of tobacco products, was passed in parliament.
Vendors found selling less than 10 cigarettes per customer will face a fine of 50,000 shillings (USD 750). The bill is to protect minors from tobacco advertising. Health assistant minister Enoch Kibunguchy was quoted as saying that the aim was not to ban smoking but to eradicate second-hand smoking and the negative impacts tobacco advertising has on children.
