Drastic measures to curb smoking went into effect on 1 January in France with a full ban on lighting up in cafes, restaurants and discotheques.
The first phase of the smoking ban went into effect in February 2007 with the prohibition of smoking in workplaces, schools, airports, hospitals and other 'closed and covered' public places such as train stations.
As of 1 January 2008 this ban was extended to 'places of entertainment and conviviality', including night clubs, casinos and discos. Smoking will be tolerated on terraces, even if they are covered. Sealed and ventilated smoking chambers are also allowed but their specifications are strict.
Under the measure, those caught lighting up inside face a € 68 (US$ 100) fine, while owners who turn a blind eye to smoking in their establishments face a € 750 fine. (pi)
