Plain-packaged cigarette packs hit shelves

New regulations in Canada will come into effect on 9 November, as plain packaged cigarettes already start to appear on shelves, reported CTV News.

From the 9 November, cigarette packages in Canada will no longer bear logos and distinctive designs, as these will be replaced with a base brown colour, basic grey text and a minimalist layout. Some of these new packs have already hit shelves and retailers will have 90 days from when the new regulations come in to sell off any remaining inventory they still have.
According to the report, this will prevent cigarette brands from appealing to younger people and will prevent cigarette packs from being miniature advertisements for the production company. Geoffrey Fong, a psychology professor at the University of Waterloo, was quoted as saying “What we’ve found is that plain packaging has tremendous effects on reducing the appeal of these deadly products.”
In 2021, Canada will also make it mandatory for cigarette packages to be exclusively “slide-and-shell” packages. This will give packs a wider surface area, meaning Canadian cigarette packs will display the largest health warnings in the world, the report states.
The new regulations will also enforce stricter rules on brand names, for example, Belmont Silver will become Belmont Select. This is due to the new laws also restricting names referencing colours or filter characteristics.
