Calls to the national Quitline service have increased by 78 per cent since the introduction of plain packaging for tobacco products in 2012, according to a study by the Cancer Institute of New South Wales.
The study compares the introduction of graphic warnings in 2006 and concludes that the spike in calls after the introduction of plain packaging lasted longer. This “sustained increase”, the study observes, is an “important incremental step in comprehensive tobacco control.” The study was published in the Medical Journal of Australia.
As well as removing branding, colours, imagery and corporate logos, plain packaging also features the Quitline number.
