Philip Morris USA said it paid about USD 3.1 billion (EUR 2.4 billion) to states under terms of the Master Settlement Agreement, bringing total outlays to more than USD 62 billion since the tobacco settlement agreements of 1997 and 1998.

Included in the annual payment is USD 203 million to the MSA’s disputed payment account (DPA). PM USA disputes that amount which was levied under the Non-Participating Manufacturer (NPM) adjustment in 2010. PM USA said its annual payment reflects a credit of USD 483 million under the settlement reached with 20 states and jurisdictions of NPM claims between 2003 and 2012.
More than USD 4.7 billion is in the DPA. The NPM settlement with the 20 states means about USD 2 billion in the DPA will be returned to tobacco companies, PM USA said.  (ci)
