Philip Morris International (PMI) plans to launch its IQOS heated tobacco platform in the nation with the largest smoking population after China, Reuters reported, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter.

India has 106 million adult smokers, according to World Health Organisation data, but also strict laws around tobacco use.
A government source told Reuters that it would keep an “open mind” to PMI’s intention to sell a device in the country that would help smokers to quit. The source added that such a device could be banned if found to be harmful, Reuters reported.
