Spanish police have seized 250 tons of contraband tobacco leaf worth EUR 40 million (USD 47 million) in western Spain, Gulfnews reported, citing a statement from the law enforcement agency Guardia Civil.
Police made the seizure in the western provincial city of Caceres in October, following an investigation launched earlier this year after officers seized two tons of contraband leaf and arrested two men transporting the tobacco leaf by truck.
At 250 tons, Gaurdia Civil said it is “the biggest seizure of tobacco leaves in Europe”, Gulfnews reported.
Four members of the same family were reportedly arrested during the operation and authorities suspect the group carried out over 6,000 deliveries, the news site said.
