Politicians seek ban on flavoured cigarillos

Two members of the Ontario Legislature introduced a joint private member's bill last Friday that would ban the sale of single, flavoured cigarillos.

It would require that they be sold in packages of no less than 20 and without candy flavours.
France Gélinas, a new Democratic member of the provincial parliament (MPP), introduced the bill with Liberal backbencher Dave Levac. He said the government needs to close the gap in the province's anti-smoking laws as part of its efforts to curb tobacco use.
Single, flavoured cigarillos are sold under a loophole in the laws governing cigarette sales. Because the cigarillos are sold individually and wrapped in tobacco leaf instead of paper, they are exempt from federal rules which require marked warnings about the health risks associated with smoking. Cigarillos sold in packages carry a 'Health Canada' warning on the back.
The bill appears to be well on its way to a speedy passage. MPPs from all three parties voted in support of it on Friday. It passed a second reading and has been referred to a government committee for debate. (pi)
