RJ Reynolds Tobacco (RJRT) asked regulators for approval to market its Camel line of snus as reduced risk products, Reynolds American said.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulators were asked to grant Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) status to six variants of Camel snus, which could reduce or modify regulatory requirements such as the health warnings printed on packaging. RJRT’s application is the second MRTP request for a snus product, following one by Swedish Match for variants of its General snus product. FDA has yet to grant an MRTP request for any tobacco product.
RJRT submitted more than 450,000 pages of documentation in support of its application, Reynolds said. Snus is a form of oral tobacco.
