Indonesia's second-largest tobacco company, PT Handaya Mandala Sampoerna, reported on Tuesday a 21 per cent rise in net profit for the first half of this year as it grabbed market share from rivals.

Sampoerna, nearly 100 per cent controlled by Philip Morris International, the tobacco arm of Altria Group, said its net profit rose to 1.89 trillion rupiah (US$ 208 million) from 1.57 trillion in the same period a year ago.
The company increased its market share to 28.6 per cent by June from 22 per cent a year ago, while the overall industry volumes declined by more than 12 per cent, industry data showed.
Sampoerna's main rival, Indonesia's largest tobacco company, PT Gudang Garam, saw its market share falling to 29 per cent from 31 per cent over that period.
Sampoerna's revenue climbed 29.4 per cent to 14.6 trillion rupiah, while operating profit rose 26.5 per cent to 2.8 trillion.
Gudang Garam, on the other hand, posted a 49 per cent decline in its first half net profit to 545 billion rupiah, despite revenue rising 2.8 per cent to 12.67 trillion rupiah. (US$ 1 = 9,085 rupiah) (pi)
