Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has issued an instruction banning smoking and the sale of tobacco products in offices, production facilities and other work places, as well as schools, hospitals and on public transport.
Further bans by the prime minister include all forms of advertising, trade promotion and sponsorship activities by tobacco companies as well as cigarettes sales through vending machines, over the telephone or internet.
In an effort to prevent harm caused by tobacco use and realise Vietnam’s commitment to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, Dung has also ordered local authorities to participate in a public information campaign with the aim of highlighting the harm caused by tobacco use and getting consumers to give up smoking.
The warning, "Smoking will cause lung cancer" will be required on every cigarette package as of March 2008. (sra)
