STOP watchdog directors revealed

The joint directors of the new STOP tobacco industry watchdog organisation will be the University of Bath, the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, and The Global Centre for Good Governance in Tobacco Control, Bloomberg Philanthropies revealed in a press note.

The three bodies that will direct STOP are engaged in tobacco control research and publication activities, the press release detailed. The University of Bath, with its Tobacco Control Research Group, runs the industry watchdog website, tobaccotactics.org. The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, based in France, has worked with governments in 50 countries to reduce tobacco use and produces the Tobacco Atlas online public health resource together with its subgrantee, Vital Strategies. The Global Centre for Good Governance in Tobacco Control, based at Thailand’s Thammasat University's School of Global Studies, maintains the Tobacco Industry Interference Index, which surveys public health policy in nine Southeast Asian countries.
Launched by Bloomberg Philanthropies in March, STOP (Stopping Tobacco Organisations and Products) will receive USD 20 million (EUR 17.6 million) in funding over three years and Bloomberg Philanthropies said the funding will be used to expand tobaccotactics.org, the Tobacco Atlas, and the Tobacco Industry Interference Index. STOP will also publish investigative reports that unravel tobacco industry interference, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, the press release said.
“All of STOP's work will support the World Health Organisation (WHO) and its efforts to curtail global tobacco use, including implementation of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC),” Bloomberg Philanthropies said.
