Taxed cigarette volume last year fell to 79.5 billion units, a 0.9 per cent decline from 2013 and 67 billion sticks less than in 1991, the first year of a reunited Germany, said the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis).
Volume of taxed cigars and cigarillos increased 8.4 per cent to 3.9 billion sticks and pipe tobacco rose 13.2 per cent to 1,359 tonnes in 2014, possibly benefitting from higher taxes on cigarettes and fine-cut from January, 2014.
Fine-cut volume at 25,700 tonnes was 0.1 per cent lower than 2013, Destatis said. Another tax increase for cigarettes and fine-cut took effect this January.
