The duty on cigarettes in Poland is to rise by 23 per cent starting from 14 January 2008.
In line with ministerial plans, duty will rise from PLN 80.87 (US$ 33.19) per thousand cigarettes to PLN 91.00.
According to the ministry of finance, the cost of a pack of cigarettes will rise by 15-17 per cent. However, the Polish Press Agency (PAP) reports that some cigarette manufacturers are claiming that prices will go up by over 20 per cent.
The hike in prices is due to European Union rules, which set a minimum of 57 per cent duty on cigarettes. (pi)
