The value of Mozambique’s tobacco exports fell by 25 per cent year-on-year to USD 49.4 million in the first nine months of 2023, reports Club of Mozambique.
According to a statistical report by the Bank of Mozambique, tobacco exports amounted to USD 49.4 million in the first three quarters of 2023 (January to September). In the first three quarters of 2022, the figure was USD 66.4 million.
According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), Mozambique has the eighth largest tobacco-growing area in the world. With a cultivated area of 91,469 hectares, Mozambique is the third largest tobacco grower in the African region after Zimbabwe (112,770 hectares) and Malawi (100,962).
Brazil, which has the world’s third largest tobacco cultivation area with 357,230 hectares, and Mozambique are the only Portuguese-speaking countries mentioned in the WHO report, which lists the 50 countries with the largest tobacco cultivation.
