Tobacco imports from Malawi halted

All imports of tobacco from Malawi are currently being suspended by the US government amid child labour allegations, according to the Guardian.

The suspension comes after the Guardian reported about child labour in Malawi’s tobacco fields, resulting in a group of human rights lawyers putting together a legal case against tobacco giant British American Tobacco.
The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued a Withhold Release order on tobacco from Malawi, meaning that all shipments arriving in the US will be detained upon entering the country. Importers will then have to prove that their shipment of tobacco is produced under fair circumstances and in line with US law.
The CBP said that it had collected information from different sources and had issued the order after their research indicated that tobacco from Malawi was produced using forced labour and forced child labour, reports the Guardian.
“CBP wants to ensure the business community is compliant with the law requiring clean supply chains with no use of forced labour of any kind,” said Brenda Smith, the executive assistant commissioner of CBP’s office of trade.
