Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike said she would push for a ban on indoor smoking in public places in the city after a national measure died in parliament this spring, Reuters said.
Koike, whose party won a sweeping victory over Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling party this past weekend, told a major business daily the ban could go to a vote as early as this autumn, Reuters said. Tokyo has been pressured by the International Olympic Committee to prohibit smoking in public places before the city hosts the 2020 Summer Olympics.
