Vitamin E acetate was found in samples from patients affected by vaping-related injuries, Reuters reported.
In what the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is calling a “breakthrough”, Vitamin E acetate was found in all lung samples taken from 29 patients suffering from vaping-related injuries, according to Reuters.
This is the first established link between a specific substance and the lung injuries that have affected over 2,000 people nationwide. The CDC’s Principal Deputy Director, Dr Anne Schuchat said that Vitamin E acetate is “a very strong culprit of concern” and that more work needs to be done to definitively declare it a cause.
Vitamin E acetate is thought to be used as a cutting agent in illegal THC-containing products, which strengthens recommendations by health officials that people should avoid e-cigarette products that contain THC, Reuters reports.
