The Welsh government has proposed a ban on the use of electronic cigarettes in enclosed spaces such as workplaces, pubs and restaurants in a new Public Health Bill.
The ban would be the first of its kind in the UK, the Welsh government said in a statement. The Bill also includes regulations which mean shops selling e-cigarettes and tobacco products will have to join a register for retailers. Under the new measures, it will be an offence to "hand over" these products to children both in person and online.
If passed, the measures are likely to come into force from 2017, although no date has been mentioned.
“We want to get the balance right between all the things that would make a big difference to people’s health and wellbeing in the future while not wanting to intrude on the legitimate rights people have to run their own lives.” said Welsh Minister for Health and Social Services Mark Drakeford.
