Graphic images and cancer warnings will be printed onto vapes and individual cigarettes from April 2024, reports the Daily Mail.
As per new federal laws that have now been passed, vapes and cigarettes will feature labels such as ‘Toxic addiction’, ‘Poisons in every puff’, ‘Causes 16 cancers’ and ‘What is this costing you?’ along side graphic images of cancerous mouth and throat tumours as of April 2024. There will also be inserts in cigarette packs promoting the benefits of giving up smoking and information on helplines dedicated to helping smokers quit.
Health Minister Mark Butler said the new measures were necessary because smokers had grown desensitised to the warnings and images that have been printed on packets since 2011, reports the Daily Mail.
“The most concerning thing over the last 10 years is the advice that the government has received is that the smoking rates, which have been declining steadily for 50 years or so, have started to plateau,” Mr Butler said. “We are not currently on track to achieve the targets that are set out in the National Tobacco strategy,” he added.
From 1 April 2024, there will be a 12-month period for tobacco and nicotine products to comply with the new requirements, retailers will have three months more to make sure their stock is up to date.
According to the Daily Mail, the new laws will also ban the import of non-therapeutic and disposable single-use vapes in early 2024.
