The World Health Organisation plans to promote and facilitate the adoption of plain packaging for tobacco products as this year’s theme for World No Tobacco Day on 31 May.

“Plain packaging builds upon other measures as part of a comprehensive multi-sectoral approach to tobacco control,” WHO said. “Policy makers, civil society and the public can take action to ensure that their governments consider adoption of plain packaging.”
Australia in 2012 became the first country to require uniform packaging and branding. This May, the United Kingdom, France and Ireland will implement similar laws calling for drab olive-brown packs with standardised branding and large health warnings.
