The World Trade Organisation (WTO) panel reviewing the world’s first law requiring plain packaging for tobacco products has ruled Australia’s action was justified to protect public health, Bloomberg said in a report citing unnamed sources.
Initial notification of the dispute panel ruling was circulated to parties on 2 May, a WTO spokesperson told Bloomberg without commenting on its content. The full WTO ruling will be released in July, Bloomberg said in its report citing two sources close to the situation. Parties to the complaints filed in 2012 and 2013 include the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Honduras and Indonesia. An appeal is possible.
