Smokers will have to shell out more for cigarettes, shisha and e-cigarettes in 2022 as the tobacco tax is raised, reports LR Online.

For the first time in seven years, the tax on tobacco products has been raised in Germany. On average, a pack of 20 cigarettes will now cost EUR 0.10 more than in the previous year. From 2023, another EUR 0.10 raise will come into effect and in 2025 and 2026, prices will again go up by EUR 0.15, according to LR Online.
E-cigarettes will also see prices increase as a tax on liquids has been decided. From 1 July 2022, a 10 ml liquid that cost around EUR 4 up until now, will include EUR 1.60 in taxes and cost around EUR 5.60. In 2024, taxes will go up to EUR 2.00 meaning liquids will cost around EUR 6. In 2025 and 2026, a further EUR 0.60 will be added to the tax amount, resulting in a total price of EUR 6.60 and EUR 7.20, respectively.
The tax on shisha tobacco will also be raised from 1 January 2022. Prices for 200g of shisha tobacco currently lie between EUR 15 and EUR 20. The average new prices with higher taxes have been calculated as follows: 2022: EUR 15/kg, 2023: EUR 19/kg, 2025: EUR 21/kg, 2026: EUR 23/kg, reports LR Online.
Another change to tobacco laws that came into effect on 1 January 2022, is the ban on outdoor tobacco advertising. This applies to ‘traditional’ tobacco products such as cigarettes but will include heat-not-burn products from 1 January 2023 and e-cigarettes from 1 January 2024.
