A recent survey by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed that 23 per cent of the Maldivian population use tobacco and tobacco-based products, reports The Edition.

More than 3,000 respondents took part in the survey, which was conducted from 2021 to March 2022. Discussing the survey results, the HPA found that one in four Maldivians use tobacco products.
The survey found that 35.6 per cent of female respondents used tobacco in the form of cigarettes, while the percentage for male respondents was 64.4 per cent.
In addition, 20 per cent of tobacco users were between 15 and 29 years old, 29 per cent were between 30 and 44 years old and 23 per cent were between 45 and 65 years old.
The current population of Maldives is around 540,000 based on projections of the latest United Nations data.
