Philip Morris International (PMI) told an advisory panel it expects 6 million US smokers to switch to its IQOS tobacco heating device if the company is allowed to communicate what it claims are reduced health risks of using the device compared to smoking cigarettes, Reuters reported.
PMI has applied to the US Food and Drug Administration for Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) status for its IQOS tobacco heating device and heatsticks.
MRTP status would allow IQOS to be sold with modified health warnings.
This week, the company is putting its case to an advisory panel which will vote on the matter on Thursday. The vote is not binding, but will influence the FDA’s decision, Reuters reported.
