A reduced-risk advocacy group has joined Swedish Match in asking asked for a judicial review on whether to overturn the EU snus ban on grounds the oral tobacco product is “much safer” than smoking tobacco.
New Nicotine Alliance (NNA) said it would ask the UK High Court to accept its case and forward it for review to the European Court of Justice (ECJ). NNA said its claim would add a consumer voice to a similar request for review filed in the UK last year by snus manufacturer Swedish Match.
“UK law is based in EU law – and yes – we are still in the EU,” said NNA Chairman Gerry Stimson. “The ECJ process still stands. If, and it’s a big if, the case is referred to the ECJ, and if the ECJ rules against the ban then this decision would apply across all of the EU.”
