British American Tobacco is threatening to sue the Namibian government over plans to increase the size of health warnings on cigarette packs and include graphic images, the New Era reported.
BAT was responding at the onset of a 30-day consultation period for submissions on the Tobacco Products Control Act of 2010 before the law takes effect, the newspaper said in a story on its website.
The act would require warnings including pictures of stained teeth, throat cancer and damaged lungs. Coupled with text messages, the warnings would take up most of the space on a cigarette pack, the newspaper said.
BAT is the dominant supplier in the Namibian tobacco market, where it sells about 330 million cigarettes annually, according to New Era. (pi)
