The Cabinet unanimously approved an outline for a bill that will mandate plain packaging for cigarettes to remove branding and expand health warnings, the Irish Times reported.
“Cigarette packs have been described as the last billboard for the tobacco industry; this legislation will force the industry to show with greater clarity, the potential devastating effects of smoking on health,” Health Minister James Reilly said in remarks reported by the newspaper.
Public Health (Standardised Packaging of Tobacco) Bill 2013 goes to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children for hearings, according to the Irish Times. The panel is comprised of members from both houses of parliament.
Australia currently is the only country with a plain-packaging law.
