A new organisation, which provides citizens with the latest facts, news and research in combatting the growing trade in illegal cigarettes, was formed in Canada.
Amid growing controversy over the rampant trade and access to illegal cigarettes, a group of businesses, organisations and individuals have formed a new organisation, the National Coalition Against Contraband Tobacco (NCACT). The organisation focuses on educating the public and politicians on the threat created by illegal cigarettes.
Using a web portal (www.stopcontraband.ca) the NCACT plans to deliver the facts about contraband tobacco to retailers, government officials and Canadians everywhere.
Recent estimates suggest that in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, where the contraband tobacco problem is at its worst, the percentage of contraband has exceeded 40 per cent of the total cigarette market and continues to rise. (pi)
