Farmers resume tobacco sales

Tobacco sales resumed on 24 May after farmers had stopped sales a day earlier in protest over non-payment, according to the daily newspaper, The Herald.

Business had grounded to a halt at the country's three auction floors – Burley Marketing Zimbabwe, Tobacco Sales Floor and Zimbabwe Tobacco Auction Centre as farmers insisted that sales would only resume after their grievances have been dealt with.
Some disgruntled farmers claimed to have sold their tobacco three weeks ago but had not yet received their payments. A few farmers complained that they had only received ZWD 5 billion (EUR 7.82) in cash while the remainder was deposited into their accounts. They said the bulk of the ZWD 5 billion went towards settling food bills that they had accumulated during their stay at the floors.
Managing Director Wilson Gopoza at Tobacco Sales Ltd acknowledged the crisis but stated the situation would improve once they started receiving agro-cheques. (pi)
