The Brazilian Ministry of Agrarian Development on Friday said cigarettes in Brazil pay fewer tributes compared to countries in the European Union and the United States. The idea is to expand the charging of the "CIDE" tax (Contribuicão de Intervencão no Dominio Economico), which currently applies to fuels only. The government also wants to create new incentives for farmers to abandon the cultivation of tobacco. The proposal, presented to other countries that produce tobacco, is part of the document of the United Nations WHO, which is in charge of monitoring the Framework Convention for Tobacco Control. The goal is reduce tobacco planting in all countries. (pi)
