According to a WTO spokesperson, the Central American country has appealed against a WTO decree which was won in June by Australia on plain packaging regulations for tobacco, Reuters reported.
The WTO council said that Australia’s plain packaging law improved public health by decreasing the use of tobacco products, rejecting claims that other requirements or methods would be just as effective, according to the report.
WTO also rebuffed the claim that Australia had breached tobacco trademark infringement laws and intellectual property rights.
Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Indonesia, which were the other complainants, have not yet announced if they will appeal the ruling. Australia’s plain packaging law, which has been in effect since 2010, prohibits logos and individually coloured cigarette packaging. All tobacco brand names have to be printed in small standardised fonts on olive coloured cigarette packaging.
