The Illinois Senate in a narrow 23-25 vote rejected legislation to increase the minimum age for purchasing tobacco products to 21 from 18, the Associated Press said.
Hawaii, California and some municipalities are among jurisdictions that have raised the age to 21. The Illinois measure would not have criminalised tobacco purchases by underage buyers, the AP reported.
