Leaf exports to Vietnam up 24 per cent

According to the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce, the country exported 1,200 tonnes of dry tobacco leaf to Vietnam, worth USD 2.37 million in 2017, which is a 24 per cent increase on the 989 tonnes of tobacco valued at USD 1.91 million exported to Vietnam in 2016, The Phnom Penh Post newspaper reported.

Cambodia and Vietnam reached an agreement on preferential duties for agriculture products that crossed their shared border in 2016. According to this contract, Cambodia was permitted to export 3,000 tonnes of dried tobacco leaf to Vietnam duty-free in 2016, according to the newspaper.
Figures from the Ministry of Agriculture showed that the country yielded 9,089 tonnes of tobacco in the last growing Season [2016], which was up 37 per cent compared with the prior season, the newspaper said. The growing area in the last growing season also increased to 6,859 hectares, which was up 19 per cent from the previous season, the newspaper reported.
Long Kemvichet, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, said it is uncertain if the arrangement between the two countries will still be repeated in 2018, The Phnom Penh Post newspaper reported.
